The Scarsdale Diet
The Original Low Carb Diet
In 2005, the Food Network listed The Scarsdale Diet as number two of its top five food fads of the 70's. Published in 1979, The Scarsdale Diet is a low-carbohydrate, low-calorie weight-loss diet plan. Invented by physician, Dr. Herman Tarnower, in an attempt to help his patients eat sensibly and stay trim.
During 40 years of practice, Dr. Tarnower advised many patients to lose weight. When they complained that diets didn’t work, he decided to create a plan that did. He performed years of research and medical trials, developing a weight loss program that he believed was simple, safe and fast.
A two week, low fat, low carbohydrate, high protein diet was the result. Unlike Atkins, The Scarsdale Diet includes some complex carbohydrates such as bread and fruits.
You may be able to drop up to 20 pounds in two weeks. If you have more weight to lose, cycle off the diet for two weeks and repeat.
Meals consist of fruit, vegetables, and lean sources of protein in unlimited amounts. Like other low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets, The Scarsdale Diet eliminates high fiber foods in favor of quick weight loss.
You have to eat exactly what is assigned. Between meals you can eat unlimited carrots and celery. Beverages allowed are regular or decaffeinated coffee, black; tea; club soda (with lemon, if desired); and diet sodas in all flavors.
Herbal appetite suppressants are encouraged. Hoodia would work well with this plan.
With four plans to choose from (gourmet, money-saver, vegetarian and international) you will never be bored with the food.

Much of the weight loss will be water. Any time you are on a high protein plan, be sure to drink plenty of water. If carbs are restricted, your body will go into a process called "ketosis" and you will need to flush those excess ketones from your body. |

The book experienced a sales boost when Dr. Tarnower was murdered on March 10, 1980, by his long-time lover Jean Harris (headmistress of a fashionable female boarding school - The Madeira School in McLean, Virginia). The murder was the subject of a 2006 made-for-TV movie called Mrs. Harris.
